Nutritional Value:

Oats provide a high dose of fiber specifically soluble fiber in the form of beta-glucan, a good dose of calcium, iron, manganese, folate, vitamin E, protein, antioxidants polyphenols, saponins, aventhramide, and B-vitamins like B1/thiamine, B2/riboflavin, B3/niacin, B5/pantothenic acid, B6/pyridoxine, B12/cobalamins, and biotin.

Benefits:

Oats are tasty, convenient, and cheap. They have a high satiety level meaning it takes longer to digest keeping you feeling full longer. On a weight for weight basis, oats provide the highest concentration of protein, fat, calcium, iron, manganese, thiamine, folacin, and vitamin E than any other unfortified whole grains.

Eating oatmeal 5+ times per week reduces heart disease by 29%. Studies also show that eating 3g of beta-glucan a day (1.5 cups of cooked oat groats) will reduce blood cholesterol by 5% and lower the risk of heart attack by 10%. They also provide very similar antioxidants effects as red wine does. Oatmeal may improve the harmful reduction in blood flow that usually occurs after eating a high-fat meal. They reduce blood pressure, blood sugar and insulin all important factors to control diabetes and lower LDL cholesterol, and boost protective HDL cholesterol. Oats are an excellent source of soluble fiber and known to improve gastrointestinal health. Colloidal oatmeal is effective for the symptomatic relief of dry skin and itching.

Versatile, oats are added to meat loaf, burgers, and fish cakes, used to thicken soups and sauces, or as a topping for fruit crisps, and substitutes for barley, rice, or cereal. Oat groats are chewy and should be cooked, soaked a long time before consumption.

Oats provide a high-dose of:

Polyphenols, antioxidants that may suppress tumor growth, detoxify carcinogens, interfere with the damaging effects of high estrogen levels, lower the risk of stroke, and prevent plaque buildup in the arteries.

Antioxidants, nutrients and enzymes believed to play a role in preventing the development of such chronic diseases as cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, cataracts, and clearly slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a common cause of blindness in older adults.

Beta-glucan, a soluble fiber that makes you feel full which may reduce your appetite. Also, it lowers LDL cholesterol reducing the risk of heart disease, regulates blood sugar which may reduce the onset risk or symptoms of metabolic syndrome and diabetes, and may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, and help manage diarrhea.

Insoluble fiber that speeds the passage of foods through your digestive track facilitating regular defecation and adds bulk to stool which alleviates constipation. This may help people suffering from hemorrhoids and prevent diverticulitis, an intestinal disorder in which small pockets bulging from the colon wall become inflamed.

Oats provide a good-dose of:

Saponins, a flavonoid, may bind to cholesterol in the digestive tract lowering the risk for heart disease.

Aventhramide that provides reduced rate of LDL oxidation protecting against cancers and heart disease, have anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic, and antipruritic properties. Plays a major role in histamine related itching and redness in skin.

Folate, needed to make DNA, RNA, and red blood cells, and to synthesize certain amino acids. Folate helps prevent congenital neurological defects in pregnant or woman who are planning pregnancy.

Protein, necessary for the building and repair of body tissues, produces enzymes, hormones, and other substances the body uses. Regulates body processes, such as water balancing, transporting nutrients, and making muscles contract, keeps the body healthy by resisting diseases, and prevents one from becoming easily fatigued by producing stamina and energy.

Calcium, mineral that builds strong bones and teeth, vital to muscle and nerve function, blood clotting, and metabolism. It also helps regulate blood pressure, prevent osteoporosis, and may help protect against colon cancer.

Vitamin E, an important antioxidant that enhances the immune system, protects cell membranes and fatty acids, maintains muscles, and helps make red blood cells.

Magnesium, a mineral that relaxes blood vessels improving blood flow and nutrient delivery while lowering blood pressure. A perfect mineral for a healthy cardiovascular system and effective energy metabolism. Stimulates bone growth and necessary for muscle function.

Iron, needed to produce hemoglobin which transports oxygen throughout the body.

Thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, vitamin that plays a role in energy metabolism, helps maintain normal digestion, appetite, and proper nerve function.

Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, which plays a key role in energy metabolism, and for the metabolism of fats, ketone bodies, carbohydrates, and proteins. It is essential for energy metabolism and aids adrenal functions.

Niacin, also known as vitamin B3, involved in DNA repair, and the production of steroid hormones in the adrenal gland. Niacin helps protect against pellagra, characterized by dermatitis, diarrhea, and mental disturbance. It is needed to metabolize energy, promote normal growth, and in large doses lowers cholesterol.

Vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid, aids in energy metabolism, normalizing blood sugar levels, and synthesizing antibodies, cholesterol, hemoglobin, and some hormones.

Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, vitamin that promotes protein metabolism, metabolism of carbohydrates and release of energy, proper nerve function, and synthesis of red blood cells.

Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamins, needed to make red blood cells, DNA, RNA, and myelin for nerve fibers.

Biotin, vitamin for energy metabolism.
