Dried longan pulp

The fruit of a plant belonging to the sapindacea family. The dried fruit is used for medicinal purposes.

Nature and flavor
Sweet and warm.

Constituents:
Rich in glucose, sucrose, choline and vitamins B and C, tartaric acid, protein and fat.

Actions:
Longan pulp is a tonic for the spleen, the heart and blood. In traditional Chinese conception, it benefits the heart and promotes one's intelligence. It is used to check palpitation, insomnia and dreamy sleep due to over-anxiousness; loss of appetite, general malaise, and watery diarrhoea due to hypofunction of the spleen. It is especially good for postpartum anemia.

Recipe examples:
(1) For anemia. Use 5g dry longan pulp, 10g lotus seeds and 100g rice to cook porridge at meal.
(2) For dizziness, general weakness. Cook 30g dry longan pulp, 30g red dates in water. Consume at a draught.

(3) For infirmity and postpartum weakness. Put 30g dry longan pulp and 3g sugar in a bowl and then cover with gauze. Steam and then consume 1-2 teaspoonful with boiled water.

Remarks:
Longan pulp, either dry or fresh, is believed to be quite warm. It is advisable not to take too much longan, or epistaxis and dry throat and mouth may result.
